Kibogos Himmelfahrt ist ein moderner Mythos und eine literarische Karambolage von sich konkurrierenden Geschichten im kolonialisierten Land Ruanda. In vier ineinander verwobenen Teilen erzählt die ruandisch-französische Autorin Scholastique Mukasonga von einer kleinen ruandischen Gemeinschaft am Fuss eines himmelhohen Felsens. Im besetzten Ruanda zur Zeit des Zweiten Weltkrieges wartet sie auf Regen. Während christliche «Padri» tagsüber zu Marienprozessionen animieren, wendet sich die Gemeinschaft nachts heimlich an Kibogo, einen verstorbenen Königssohn, der Ruanda einst vor der Dürre rettete. Wer hat die Deutungshoheit über Kult, Mythos und Legende? Scholastique Mukasonga erzählt in faszinierendem und ruhigem, bisweilen märchenhaftem Ton und wurde für ihre Bücher mehrfach ausgezeichnet.

Kibogo est monté au ciel est un mythe moderne, un carambolage littéraire où se télescopent les récits parallèles et souvent divergents du Rwanda colonisé. En quatre parties entrelacées, l’autrice franco-rwandaise Scholastique Mukasonga conte l’histoire d’une petite communauté rwandaise nichée au pied d’une immense falaise. Dans le Rwanda colonisé, pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, le peuple attend la pluie. Le jour, les pères chrétiens les poussent à rejoindre les processions à la gloire de Marie, mais la nuit, la commaunauté se tourne secrètement vers Kibogo, le fils défunt d’un roi, qui sauva jadis le Rwanda de la sécheresse et de la soif. Qui détient la vérité sur les cultes, les mythes et les légendes? Scholastique Mukasonga a été maintes fois récompensée pour ses livres. Son œuvre a trouvé un écho bien au-delà des frontières françaises.

India and Kallas live in a residential complex in a stiflingly hot and grimy city. She is the moon, he is the sun, and together they are happy. Until Desma, a childhood friend of Kallas, and her boyfriend Lafayette invite them to their big house by the sea. An oppressive feeling of passivity increasingly overcomes the couples, who talk about the ghosts of the dark past that still haunt them. Then, like an omen, three children show up, unaccompanied and with nowhere to go. So they take them in – for a few days, which turn into weeks. Johanne Lykke Holm, an up-and-coming Danish novelist, tells a melodramatic fairy tale of lost children, adults unable to meet their needs, and cosmic twists of fate that weren’t meant to be. Meanwhile, a fire breaks out nearby, and the sun turns red.
